Race to the Top

In August 2010, U.S. Secretary of Education Arne Duncan announced that Hawaii had won a $75 million federal Race to the Top grant. Hawaii and only 10 other states and the District of Columbia were awarded Race to the Top funding based on their plans for education reform.

Hawaii’s application mapped out a comprehensive five-point plan focused on:

    1. Tying high-quality college- and career-ready standards and assessments to a statewide curriculum;
    2. Improving longitudinal data collection and use;
    3. Cultivating, rewarding, and leveraging effective teaching and leading;
    4. Providing targeted support to struggling schools and students; and
    5. Aligning organizational functions to support reform outcomes.
